| Bisphosphonates and Monoclonal Antibodies: Understanding their Impact on Implant Dentistry |
June 26, 2013 |
James Rutkowski, DMD, PhD |
As the population ages more implant candidates are taking medications to either treat or prevent osteoporosis. The medications most often used are Bisphosphonates (BPs) or the newer monoclonal antibodies (MAs). Both classes of these medications affect normal bone turnover, and in doing so put the patient at risk for osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). This presentation will explain the mechanism of action of BPs and MAs and the connection to ONJ. Pathological issues, complications, and treatment decisions that are of concern to the patient and clinician will be discussed. |
