Professional Bio

Dr. Walter Chitwood was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and of the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry. His postgraduate training includes implant externships at the Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Rehabilitation in Clearwater, FL and the Misch International Implant Institute in Dearborn, MI.

Dr. Chitwood is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He is a Fellow of several organizations including the American Society of Osseointegration, the Academy of Dentistry International, the Academy of Implants and Transplants, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the International College of Dentists. He is an Honored Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and has recently been inducted as a Fellow into the Academy for Sports Dentistry.

In addition to his private dental practice, he holds several teaching appointments, including, Assistant Professor- New York University- Langone and being a faculty member of the AAID MaxiCourses of Oregon and Rutgers University College of Dentistry and Adjunct Professor – Jacksonville University (MSD Comprehensive Oral Implantology Program). He is also the Tennessee Clinical Site Director for the JU Residency program, located at Golden Oak Sedation Dental and Implant Center.
He has served as the Athletic Dentist for Middle Tennessee State University since 1985.
Dr. Chitwood has also held many offices in his career. He is a Past President of the American Board of Oral Implantology, Past President of the Southern District of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and is on the Board of Directors for the Tennessee Academy of General Dentistry as well as the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. He has also been selected as an editorial reviewer for the Journal of Oral Implantology, the official publication of the AAID. He is current the Southern District Representative for the AAID Board of Trustees.
